The California Fire Safe Council (CFSC) supports grassroots efforts for community-led wildfire resiliency through programmatic support, technical assistance, and grant funding. Since 1993, CFSC has promoted over 300 local Fire Safe Councils (FSCs) throughout California to become the “neighborhood watch” of fire safety. The FSC model recognizes that community-based organizations are best suited to identify and understand their community’s unique needs, challenges, and strengths to develop and implement locally tailored mitigation and preparedness solutions. The model also provides a mechanism to coordinate local resiliency efforts and leverage community-based organizations to inform, empower, and mobilize their neighbors and fellow community members into action. The FSC approach unites the Firewise and Fire-Adapted Communities principles by providing infrastructure and capacity to manage projects, administer grants, develop mitigation and preparedness programs, and provide training and education to their neighbors.
